I absolutely LOVE this tradition, it’s such a joyous and wonderful part of the day and it’s no wonder why we’ve been doing it since PAGAN times – crazy right!? Here are a few tips to think about to ensure you get some epic confetti pics on your wedding day…
1. Check with your venue if/where you’re allowed
Ask permission first as often venues or churches only allow confetti in certain areas outside. So be sure to check with them in advance first where and if you’re allowed, and what TYPE of confetti they will allow.
2. Biodegradable is best!
If it’s being thrown outside, it’s likely they’ll only allow biodegradable/flower petals. And of course this is much better for the environment! Most of the confetti that’s available nowadays is indeed biodegradable but definitely check first what your venue require.
3. Consider how/when you’ll do the confetti
Will you be doing confetti at the Church or at the reception venue perhaps? A classic time for doing the confetti photos is typically right after you guys get married. However after the ceremony, if all the guests just follow you out, it can be a bit of an anti-climax and you’ll be showered with hugs and congratulations rather than going straight into confetti. So I recommend that as you walk down the aisle after you get married you go hide for 5 minutes somewhere (speak with your venue where would be best for this!) and soak in the fact you’ve just got married! Whilst you’re off hiding, I’ll line up your guests in 2 lines outside, all armed with confetti! It’s a good idea to have one of your bridal party to be in charge of distributing the confetti at this point too. Then as you come through you’ll be showered with ALLL the confetti love!
4. Get your guests to throw upwards, rather than straight at you
A great tip here is to get your guests to throw your confetti upwards rather than straight into your face. This allows for the confetti to stay airborne and results in much better photos!
5. Look Up
As you’re walking through, resist the urge to look down and avoid confetti getting in your face. I promise looking up will make for better photos. Walk nice and slowly, and let that confetti flutter all over you!
6. Get twice as much confetti as you think you need
You want to have at least 2 large hand fulls per guest. Your guests will probably forget to bring their own confetti so when buying it, get about twice as much as you think you’ll need, you can never have too much confetti!! Also consider how you’ll hand out your confetti to your guests. You could put it all in a basket and have a flower girl or another member of the bridal party to walk around and hand it out to everyone. Another option would be to use cones, or little bags, these could even be personalised with your initials and wedding colours to fit your day! I definitely recommend having a designated person on the day to be in charge of the confetti to make sure everyone has some.
7. Choosing the confetti
‘Disc’ biodegradable paper confetti is best for flutter and colour and photographs MUCH better. Petals are best for the environment! With petal confetti you definitely need lots (more than you think!) You can do homemade or buy from somewhere like Shropshire Petals.
8. Confetti Cannons
Oh yes, confetti cannons are a thing and they’re awesome!! You can buy these online from Etsy/Amazon, and again you can match these to your wedding colours! These are a great option if you’re a little nervous about the first dance, have a couple of your bridesmaids/ushers to set off a couple during this time to take the pressure off a little bit. Or you can have them going off during the confetti tunnel for an extra confetti moment!
9. ENJOY IT!
Enjoy this part of the day, it’s not every day you get pelted in the face with pieces of paper or dried flowers, it will be chaos, but it will be so much fun and the photos will be awesome. Make the most of it!! Walk nice and slow, lots of smiles at your guests, and if you’re feeling fancy, go for a kiss at the end of the confetti tunnel!!
